On September 29, 2006, Suburban Hospital of Bethesda, Maryland celebrated the official opening of the NIH Heart Center at Suburban Hospital. This state-of-the-art cardiac surgery, research and training center is a reality in large part due to the legal work of Gallagher, Evelius & Jones attorneys Jack Tranter and Paul Caiola.
Mr. Tranter and Mr. Caiola won many key victories for Suburban Hospital, resulting in the required State approval of the Heart Center. Despite intense opposition from other hospitals that wanted to initiate cardiac surgery programs and from existing cardiac surgery providers defending the status quo, Mr. Tranter and Mr. Caiola ultimately prevailed. This ten-year legal battle included three decisions by Maryland’s highest court, the Maryland Court of Appeals, one decision rendered by the Court of Special Appeals, five Circuit Court cases and three contested administrative proceedings.
The successful work of Mr. Tranter and Mr. Caiola will greatly benefit cardiac patients in Maryland and beyond, as the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins Medicine will participate in clinical care, research and training at the Heart Center. “The NIH Heart Center at Suburban brings a world-class team of heart specialists and surgeons to individuals in Montgomery County and the greater Washington, DC, region,” said NHLBI Director Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. “The program’s integration of scientific research with superior heart care will help not only Suburban’s patients, but also will ultimately benefit heart patients across the country.”
