Biography
Ryan Potter practices in the related areas of real estate, land use/zoning, and governmental relations. He advises sophisticated religious and charitable institutions, health care systems, universities, and commercial developers in complex real estate projects, from strategic planning, financing, and acquisition through construction, leasing and disposition. In his active land use practice, Ryan counsels clients on all aspects of zoning law, entitlements, permit approvals, code compliance, and historic preservation regulations. He has assisted the firm’s clients in securing land use approvals for significant real estate projects throughout Baltimore, and he has substantial experience in negotiations and proceedings before administrative and legislative bodies.
In addition, Ryan advises institutions and businesses on a variety of intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright protection, infringement claims, cyberlaw, and licensing issues.
Representative Matters
- Represented a major community health system in real estate acquisitions, land assemblage, and securing all zoning, land use, and permit approvals to facilitate construction of a state-of-the-art, 700,000 square foot hospital facility.
- Represented a sophisticated commercial developer in Planned Unit Development and other land use, zoning and legislative proceedings to permit construction of a prominent mixed-use waterfront project consisting of 530,000 square feet of Class A office space, 236 five-star hotel rooms, 118 residential units, and significant street-level retail and entertainment space.
- Represented a joint development venture in negotiating and enacting zoning legislation and multiple subsequent amendments to authorize 1.8 million square feet of residential and commercial real estate development on a signature waterfront Brownfields site.
- Represented a large religious institution in a successful effort to obtain legal authority to raze an apartment building over challenges posed by historic preservationists, and in subsequent zoning and regulatory proceedings to authorize construction of an urban Prayer Garden on the site.
- Represented a major charitable institution in all aspects of real estate, financing and land use and zoning proceedings to facilitate development of a first-of-its-kind facility that offers a full continuum of services to poor, working poor and homeless citizens of Baltimore.
